There are many transitions for students in Primary School.

At Wallan Primary School we have a strong transition program to support all students.

Transition From Kinder - Foundation (Prep)

School Tours

• School tours run on a weekly basis

Information Sessions

• An initial information session is offered for prospective parents to see all the amazing experiences Wallan has to offer.

2025 Foundation Parent Information Session

• We will hold information sessions on various topics for parents/carers in Term 4, whilst your child is participating in the transition program mentioned below. 
• This session will provide more detailed information for students enrolled at the school

Friday FUN Sessions

• 3 and 4 year olds can come and attend with their parent/carer.
• Listen to a story, sing a song and make a little something.
• Bookings are essential.

Foundation Transition Program

• Families who have enrolled their child for the following year can attend our Term 4 transition program. 
• We have an optional walk through the school with students and families on Friday 6th September.
• Students attend 3 transition sessions on the 16th, 23rd and 30th October in 2024.
• Enrolled families will get a letter in Term 3 indicating the time of your transition session. 

Foundation Testing Days

• In 2025 Foundation students will not attend school on Wednesday 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th February.
• Foundation students only attend on their allocated time for testing and assessment with their classroom teacher. 
• Dates and times are allocated towards the end of 2024. 

Transition Between Year Levels

At the end of the year we begin a staggered transition process to support students in their move up into the next year level. We begin with conversations, visits to classrooms and interactions with current year level teachers. Students also share with their younger peers what similarities and differences they will notice in the following year.

Students who need extra support during the transition process will work closely with their current teacher and our wellbeing team and their new teacher to make the transition as smooth as possible. 

Transition From Another School

When students transfer from another school we also ensure that we have a process in place to support the student and family. We offer school tours, time to meet with our wellbeing team and time to meet with your new class teacher.

Transition from Year 6 to Secondary School

Our Year 6 transition coordinator follows the Department of Education Primary to Secondary transition timeline each year. Wallan Primary School engages with various secondary schools to ensure that Year 5 and 6 students and their families begin to look at the prospects moving into Year 7. Secondary schools will offer information nights and/or tours at their venue. We also encourage schools to visit our students at Wallan to get to know them and share tips on secondary school life.

Orientation Day 2024

On the 10th December all Year 6 students will visit their secondary school as part of a statewide Orientation Day. More information around this day will follow from your allocated secondary school later in the year. 

Students who need extra support during the transition process will work closely with their current teacher and our wellbeing team as well as the secondary college to make the transition as smooth as possible.
